A Gastronomic Journey of Tea and Wellness in Tsuruoka – Rooted in 400 Years of Shonai Heritage

This uniquely curated gastronomic tour invites you to experience Tsuruoka—a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy—through the themes of tea and wellness, shaped by 400 years of Shonai Domain history. From the pioneering Matsugaoka Reclamation Site to two Zen temples, the tour offers mindful culinary encounters, thoughtfully designed even for the sober-curious.

Day 1: Tea Revival and Zen-Inspired Cuisine
Begin at the Matsugaoka Reclamation Site, where descendants of Meiji-era pioneers are reviving black tea cultivation that once ended in just seven years. Listen to their passionate stories while savoring the tea they’ve brought back to life—a living link to history.

Next, at Gyokusenji Temple, discover the traditional Shonai practice of incorporating wild herbs, grasses, and fruit leaves into daily life. Enjoy three unique teas paired with original and creative sweets inspired by nature.

Next to Seiryuan—known as the place where “the dragon’s breath can be heard”— stroll through the serene garden and join the head priest for a brief zazen meditation to center your mind. As twilight approaches, savor a “shokuraku” style dinner, where tea and cuisine are paired in harmony. The meal features specialties like enzyme drinks and sesame tofu made by the priest’s wife.
Your stay for the night will be at Shonai Hotel Suiden Terrasse, a minimalist, serene space designed by world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban.

Day 2: Zen Breakfast and Farmers’ Market Experience
Begin your morning at Zenpoji Temple, dedicated to the Dragon God. Following the Soto Zen tradition of Sojiji, enjoy a rare temple meal usually served only on the anniversaries of head priests’ passing: tea-infused rice, hearty kenchin-jiru soup, and simmered vegetables—all in true Zen shojin style.

End your journey with a guided tour of a local farmers’ market with a certified Food Guide who will share insights into Tsuruoka’s seasonal ingredients and their culinary uses. Learn, taste, and shop local specialties—an enriching experience that connects you deeply with the land and its people.
The tour concludes with drop-off at Tsuruoka Station.
